Hot Dog Finger Rolls

Writer: Siân Watt JonesSiân Watt Jones

Although I don't usually post savoury recipes, seen as we are currently in lockdown and people are more likely to bake, I thought I could make an exception. I ate these finger rolls as hot dog buns and they were delicious. They had a slight sweetness to them like a brioche bun and they went really well with sausages.

Yeast

One of the main ingredients in any kind of bread is yeast. The yeast ensures the bread rises by creating air bubbles in the dough and so it expands. You can buy big bags of yeast however I prefer to use 7-gram sachets as the yeast is already exactly weighed out and my recipe follows with the ingredients as sachets.

Hot Dog Finger Rolls

(Makes 12)

Ingredients:

· 500g Plain Flour

· 1tsp Salt

· 1tbsp Sugar

· 1 Sachet of Yeast (7 grams)

· 40g Butter

· 1 Egg

· 300ml Milk at room temp.

Instructions:

1. Put flour, salt, yeast and sugar into a large bowl and mix to combine.

2. Chop the butter into small cubes and add to the dry ingredients. Mix until it forms breadcrumbs.

3. In a separate bowl crack an egg into the milk and whisk until combined.

4. Pour the beaten egg and milk mixture into the breadcrumbs and mix. If you are using a stand mixer, use a dough hook.

5. Knead the dough for ten minutes either in a stand mixer using the dough hook or by hand.

6. Oil a large bowl and place the dough in. Then oil some clingfilm and place on top.

7. Leave the dough in the sun or somewhere warm like near a radiator to prove for around an hour or until it is doubled inside.

8. After proving, cut the dough into twelve equal pieces. Use an electric scale for accuracy. Roll the dough into balls and then stretch them into fingers around 14cm long.

9. Place them two lined trays 1cm apart and cover with oiled clingfilm. Leave to prove for another hour.

10. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius.

11. Bake for 15 - 20 until fully cooked and golden brown.

12. Leave to cool on a cooling rack and then serve.
